Manatee County Tax Collector awarded the Florida Tax Collectors Association Legacy Award for Excellence in Financial Operations   (Published 09-17-2020)

(Bradenton FL) Manatee County Tax Collector Ken Burton Jr., was recognized with the 2020 Legacy Award for Excellence in Financial Operations by the Florida Tax Collectors Association (FTC). Because the annual FTC Education Forum was canceled, the award was presented virtually and shipped to the Tax Collector. The Office first received the Excellence in Financial Operations Award in 2011, and since that time has received the Legacy Award.

"Our Financial Services Department is a role model financial operation and continually initiates process improvement innovations," said Tax Collector Ken Burton Jr. "Director Steve Riley and staff Nowell Semple, Antonia Medina, Angie Ford, LaToya Benton, and Tanya Raney ensure our collections and disbursements are balanced and timely. They embody our mission of performing their duties with integrity and respect, focusing on innovation and serving with excellence. I am proud and grateful to have them on our team."

The Legacy Award is one of the highest achievements the FTCA can award and recognizes Tax Collectors who have achieved exceptional innovation, customer focus, a well-managed budget, and a clean audit in the finance operations of the office. To be considered, the office must provide a copy of a clean Management Letter from the previous year's annual audit report and a detailed report of an enhancement to the award criteria.

A judging panel comprised of government financial executives from throughout Florida reviewed the Tax Collector's processes as related to the four areas of competency. The judging process was arduous and included a detailed review of the financial functions of the Tax Collector's office. The Office demonstrated that it had further enhanced its financial operations and proficiency in the areas of expertise for Innovation and Automation. The award signifies that Hon. Ken Burton Jr. has earned the designation and represents the very top echelon of elected officials.
